Read 180 Syllabus
Course Description: Read 180 is an intensive reading intervention program, designed to meet the individual needs of students whose reading achievement level has been designated as below proficiency. Students individual needs are addressed through a 90 minute model of direct teacher instruction in reading and writing, computer-adaptive software, high-interest literature, and purposeful assessment of each student.
Course Objectives:
1. Intoduce intensive reading students to the full model implementation of Scholastic Read 180.
2. After one year of full model implementation, FCAT level 1 & 2 students will show two years assessed reading growth.
3. Students will demonstrate an improved self-esteem and show greater motivation in both reading and overall school interest.
Grading Policy: Read 180 students are expected to fully participate in each component of the program. These components are based on daily whole group and small group rotations.
Whole Group Instruction (15%): 20 minutes of direct teacher instruction at the beginning of class, read-alouds, anchor videos, written response; 10 minutes of summation and wrap up at the end of class.
Independent Reading (25%): 20 minutes of silent reading, log completion, Reading Counts Quizzes with a minimal passing score of 70% or higher.
Computer Instruction (25%):20 minutes of word study, spelling review, comprehension practice, fluency testing, and individual assessment.
Small Group Instruction (25%): 20 minutes of differentiated instruction, guided reading, text work, written response, and individual conferences.
Homework (10%): Students must read 20 minutes per day, to be completed after school. Acceptable reading material includes texts, magazines, and newspapers.
Required Instructional Materials:
Students are required to have pencils/pens and notebook paper. Class folders and all instructional material will be provided.
Books are available for students to check out for the homework reading requirement.
