Ms. Webb’s November Newsletter

Hello to all. Can you believe that we are already through the first 9 weeks of school? I know it is hard to believe. I just want to start off with a few housekeeping items. First, please practice tying shoes at home. Remember that I tie shoes until Christmas break and then they are on their own. Also, you should be reading with your child for at least 15 minutes every night. Now that the temperature outside is a little unpredictable, please remember to pack a jacket or sweater so that your little one will not be cold on the playground. Please remember that when you keep your child home sick, I have to have a note in order to excuse the absence.  Now, here is what we will be covering this month in class. In Reader’s workshop we will be continuing to work on summarizing stories that we have read and using picture clues to draw conclusions about stories. So, after reading a story with your child please have them retell the main parts of the story in the correct sequence of events. Pay special attention to the characters and the setting. We will continue to work on making predictions before and during reading. Please do this with your child when you read together. Don’t forget to go back and check to see if your predictions were correct after you read. Your child will be learning about cause and effect in stories and to evaluate how the story makes them feel as they are reading. By the end of this month your child should know the following words: I, see, like, a, my, to, the, all. It would be a good idea to make flash cards and practice the words nightly. In Writer’s Workshop, the students will be beginning functional writing. They will be learning how to write steps for things that they do. In math, they will be expected to recognize, write, and order the numbers 0-15. Please practice at home. We will also be continuing our exploration of patterns. You can use household objects to create and extend

patterns at home. There are some important dates to remember for the month of November. November 3rd we will have our community focus walk beginning at 9:00 a.m.  On Thursday, November 4th 1st grade will perform in their PTA performance. There will be a Merrill Road Meal time before the show at 6:00 in the cafeteria. Friday, November 5th we will have a flag raising at 8:30 a.m. in the courtyard. There will be no school on Wednesday, November 11th. Merrill Road will be hosting Ready to learn on November 12th. I encourage all parents to bring their children to this great event. If you pre-paid to come to the Thanksgiving feast, you can join your child at 11:10 in the cafeteria. November 25th –the 27th school will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Our character trait for this month is patriotism. As always, feel free to drop me a note or an e-mail for any questions or concerns.  Have a great November!

Sincerely,

Ms. Webb
