REPORT CARDS- Go home April 12. Please sign and return the bottom right corner of your child's report card  and return with the envelope.  Your child's progress with the Reading Racer's program is in their BEE Book. There are checks by the words they master and none or an underline for the ones they do not. These are the ones to focus on but keep practicing the others because they are used daily in many reading books and assignments.  The 2nd FAIR Reading assessments (state test for K) have been completed. Reports went home with your child's results. There was a maximum score of 93% on the 2nd test - not 100%! The last test had a maximum score of 94%. I am attaching the score sheet with your child's first and 2nd test scores so you can see progress/ compare but keep in mind a 93 is like a 100. If your child went from 94 to 93, they made the maximum score on both tests. The goal is to stay the same or get a higher score IF they are lower than that. Sorry for the confusion but hope the explanation helps :-) The third assessments will start the end of April and go through May.

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS- A letter went home in January about this. Any student that does not meet FAIR requirements and makes below 50%, must take a SAT 10 test and score 50% or higher to pass or promote to 1st grade. If they do not pass, they will be REQUIRED to attend 25 out of 29 days of summer school and pass in order to be promoted.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS  I encourage you to place your orders online. You get a free book coupon and so does our class :-) There is a sheet in your child's BEE Book behind the contacts page that explains the process for ordering and class passwords needed to establish your own account and passwords. Orders may be placed and paid online or sent in to me with a check payable to Scholastic for the total (the total of all forms combined into 1 check). I usually send 5 different order forms home with different levels of books to choose from such as See Saw, Honeybee, Click (technology, computer games & DVDs). Sometimes there are special forms such as Math & Science, Holiday Favorites, etc. Scholastic order forms offer great deals and are the most affordable way to build a library that you and your child can share. Read, Read, Read And They Will Succeed!

BOX TOPS- We need your Box Tops- Collect them from anyone you know. Family, friends, church members, neighbors, etc. There are contests each month for class and student winners. We have a gameboard in the front of the school and want to win the game so we need your help!

Mystery Readers needed for every Friday morning at 8:45 (after announcements) to read your book or mine (for about 15-20 minutes). You may bring in a special item to share with your book, share treats to go with your book (Ex. muffins to go with If You Give A Moose A Muffin) , wear a special hat or outfit to go with your book (cowboy hat to go with a farm story)  or just come to share the joy of reading :-) The Sign Up Genius link is here:

NO MORE LUNCHROOM HELPERS NEEDED....YEAH!! We have an assistant for each Kindergarten class during the morning. Our para is Mrs Houghton and she is wonderful! Please welcome her. She also has a daughter in Kindergarten at ABE.

Drop Off & Pick Up-

Reminder that drop off is in the cafeteria between 8:00-8:25 AM. Teachers have morning duties and meetings in the AM and I may not be back at the room until 8:25-8:30. I normally lock my door but in the event it is ever unlocked, please do not leave your child unattended in the class or at the door. Safety First :-)

PTA Membership- Join for $5. or more if you wish. Turn in your PTA Membership envelope ASAP.

Class shirt & bag- Thanks to those of you that have already bought and are using your royal blue ABE shirt for Spirit Day (first Friday of each month) & field trips. Our cubbies are not big enough for backpacks :-) It is also easier for the kids to unpack/ pack the bag.

Snack- We are snacking outside often so pack snacks in disposable containers to make the process easy so they don't loose containers. Thank you! It is also important to send food items in containers they can open. It would be helpful to spend some time at home teaching them how to insert straws into juice containers, open packs, etc. No candy or sodas please :-)

BATHROOM- Since we do not have a bathroom in our class, I am requesting a change of clothes to keep in each student's class cubby. So far, so good. We are taking frequent bathroom breaks. :-) For those that have not heard...we are in a 'historical classroom'. President Nixon's daughter taught in our classroom for 3 years and had 'Secret Service' outside the door. They only wanted one entry/exit area so they eliminated the 'back door exit'...hence our bathroom being right outside the door.

SHOES, SHOES.... Please notice the schedule for our class and make sure your child wears sneakers on the days we have Coach Penny and Coach Streeter. (Thurs. & Fri.)This will make life much more fun for them and they won't come home with blisters :-) Also please make sure your child can tie their shoes if they wear the 'tie' kind or double knot them in the AM. Certificates are being given at the end of the 9 weeks for those that can tie their shoes. :-)

BEE Book- (Bring Everything Everyday Book) . This book will keep you and your child organized and ready for school the next day. It is also the parent and teacher source of communication back and forth. Please check your child's BEE Book EVERY NIGHT (especially the calendar for your child's daily behavior report and the folder with the Right Back To School Side to make sure there isn't something due back the next day). Unfinished classwork will being sent home on the inside cover of the BEE Book. I will not pressure them the 1st 9 weeks to finish class tasks in a time frame as they get adjusted to Kindergarten. Please take time to help your child complete any unfinished task. Some students take longer than others and I don't want to punish them for not finishing in a certain time frame. Thanks for your help!

BEHAVIOR PLAN- "Make good choices and you'll see, your coconut will stay at the top of the tree" (our class tune) to go with our behavior plan. I'm sure you noticed the behavior plan in the BEE book regarding the coconuts in the tree. You will see a blue dot or a red dot with codes for coconuts that start falling/ have to be moved from the top of the tree. Bright blue (Excellent), Teal (satisfactory), Light blue (Needs Improvement), White (Unsatisfactory).  Please speak with your child to help them set positive behavior goals. We have visits to the BIG treasure chest Friday. They work hard all week to go to the treasure chest. Ask your child where their coconut ends up each day. Crews also earn pennies for their groups' teamwork. Winning group gets treasure chest on Friday. The whole class earns treasure in a chest. When the chest fills up, everyone gets a popcorn or ice cream party. Positive behavior is rewarded frequently :-)

THANKS-

To the WHOLE GREEN TEAM for making our gardens beautiful. The Carroll family really went the extra mile to make sure we had everything covered and 'Inman Island' was created...complete with a body of water next to it! Thanks also to Mrs Synan for helping students paint fish in the water.

Thank you Mrs Greene for volunteering to be our Homework Mom on Fridays.

Are you artistic? Seeking an Art Mom/ Dad or family member to discuss a famous art print (@ 15-20 minutes 1 day/ per week. We have prints at ABE. Discussion points and info are on the back of the prints.

Thanks to the Malone family for sponsoring our Scholastic Magazines for the year.

Yearly Reminders:

Lunch vs. Snack- Please place your child's snack in a separate bag the first 9 weeks to get them used to eating a snack and not their WHOLE lunch during snack :-) I also encourage sending it in disposable containers

Personal Belongings- Make sure your child's name is on their lunchbox, coats, hats, etc.

*Absences- If your child is absent, remember we need a note to change it from unexcused to an excused absence. Illness and death are really the only excused absences but all absences count on the report card. Thanks!

Medicine- Just a reminder that if your child needs medicine during the day, you must turn it into the office in the original bottle (with prescription label) and fill out a form. Cough drops may not be sent to school unless given to the office for your child. This is for the safety of all children.
