PTA Membership Drive – Pizza Party for Winning Class!
The class with the highest percentage of PTA memberships per student on February 19 will win a pizza party in the classroom with Mrs. Bowes.
We’re well on our way to our goal of 150 memberships, but we need your help!!! Membership is only $5 – consider buying memberships for grandparents and other family members too!
Mrs. Luce and Mrs. Cotton are currently in the lead, with 67% each. Several other classrooms are hot on their heels. Look on the PTA bulletin board, as well as displays around classroom doors for the latest membership numbers for your class.
Membership forms are available in the school lobby, or on the BOALA website at: www.duvalschools.org/boala. Completed forms and dues can be dropped off in the PTA box in the school lobby.
Check out the other great resources at the website while you’re there!
Remember to turn in your forms and money by February 19th!
A Message from Ms. Bowes
Attention Parents,
For the safety of all children and to maintain our instructional momentum, please check in with the office (volunteering, appointments, lunch w/child) after the start of the school day. If your child arrives late, he/she should check in with the office and proceed to class after receiving a tardy slip. Classroom teachers are instructing and cannot be interrupted for parents dropping off items or bringing in forgotten belongings. Thank you for working with us to maximize each child’s learning experiences.

A Glimpse into Fifth Grade . . . . . . . . By: Joshua Strachan
We have been reading two nonfiction texts since we got back from Winter Break, Are Mountains Growing Taller? and Mom’s Best Friend. We made a KWL chart, took notes from each page and completed an Alphabet Graphic Organizer. In writing, we have still been taking notes and writing our rough drafts on our reports. Some students have begun to type their reports in class.
In math we have been using a 1/4, 1/2, and a 3/4 spinner to show probability. We made a line plot with Mrs. Taylor on our data that we got. The spinner landed on either white or green, then we would count how many greens there were and find the percent.
In Science, we have made an ecosystem with soil, water, a water plant, and then adding birdseed. What will happen when the water evaporates? We are making observations and predictions. We also are learning about changes in ecosystems. We also did a lab with yeast, sugar, water or acid (vinegar) to see when the yeast would work.

Every morning beginning at 8:10, the students enrolled in Bright Horizons will be sitting on the floor outside the classrooms reading. This new strategy will aid in the transition into school time. Our classroom has a box of books outside the room each morning for the students to read, if they do not have a book of their own in their backpack. It continues to be the expectation for students who are car riders that they will sit near the Media Center and read, as well, prior to 8:25.
Our Resource schedule has changed with the new Quarter. Please see below:
| Day / Time | Resource |
| Monday - 1:40-2:30 | Music |
| Tuesday | None |
| Wednesday - 1:40-2:30 | Media |
| Thursday - 1:40-2:30 | Art |
| Friday - 1:40-2:30 | P.E. |
Every Early Release day we will have Media from 1:00 - 1:30 on Friday of that week.

Online tutoring is available free for military families. I tried to get on the link below, but it didn't work. However, if you go to www.tutor.com then click on the military link it will take you to the correct page. Each branch of the military requires it's own password.
