So here's the latest classroom news!
Nov 24th--- We are now well into a routine and sometimes the holidays might distract from normal routines, so please remember to continue checking your child's agenda AND please make sure your child is reading and logging books at home. We are in the middle of testing reading levels again and have seen marked improvement in those who are reading daily!
Tentatively plans for the days before winter break include holiday crafts & party on Tuesday, Dec 15th and a "Polar Express" day on Wednesday, Dec. 16th. Look for more information soon, including a list of food items needed. (Note: we currently have 30 students)
Materials needed for a special project-----
1. empty 2 liter soda bottles (rinsed out)
2. cardboard paper towel tubes
3. empty boxes wrapped as presents (like shoe boxes, gift boxes, & small cardboard boxes)
Oct. 7th--- Mrs. Cromity reported today and she is so excited to be with us, and we are excited to have her! She will be responsible for teaching reading and language arts (writing). I will be responsible for math, science, social studies, and health. Since Mrs. Cromity is new to our district, I will be helping her make the transition and ensure that Duval County standards and curriculum are being followed.
Note: Lunch times have been adjusted(again) and our lunch time is 11:40 am.
Please make every effort to have your child complete homework daily and to read and log a book daily. I was very disappointed as I counted reading logs for September only to discover some students had logged zero books since school had started. We will now be inspecting this randomly throughout the week, so please make sure your child's at-home reading log is in their agenda.
Sept 25th-- Progress reports go home today! Remember that this is from only 4 and a half weeks of work and much of the first two weeks are spent pre-testing, which does not factor into grades. If your child's grade is borderline between two letters they still have the opportunity to improve.
The things to look for so far: Can my child add or subtract without counting on fingers? Can my child write legibly? Does my child write complete sentences that include capitalization and punctuation? Can my child retell a story they have just read?
Sept 23rd-- We are preparing for an additional teacher, however the district has notified us that we will not be receiving a surplus teacher, but will be hiring someone. This process is already under way. Due to the addition of a 4th grade teacher and our numbers the lunch and resource schedules have been adjusted. Our resource times have been moved to the beginning of the day and our new lunch time is 11:35 am. These changes become effective on Monday.
Sept 9th-- Homework is assigned on a daily basis and is checked daily, however I understand there are some times when other engagements interfere. Please make sure your child has completed all homework and turned it in by Friday. It is very important that homework is done, as it reinforces and gives additional practice for comcepts being taught in class.
If your child needs to know the homework assignment or spelling words for the week you can find this info. by clicking on the Calendar & events tab to the right. Find the date needed and double-click on homework.
Sept 8th--- Although the school year has just begun we have experienced many changes already. Our class size has grown to 30 students and we are awaiting an additional teacher. Other changes include Science along with Reading, Language, and Mathematics receiving letter grades .
For many students 2nd grade is challenging as there are some expectations and responsibilities new to them. Such as copying homework assignments and spelling words from the board and writing legibly on wide rule notebook paper.
