UPCOMING EVENTS

Early Release Day - January 20th
NO SCHOOL - January 15th and 22nd

HOMEWORK

Your child will need to read 20 minutes every night. and write a summary in their Reading Summaries Notebook (spiral notebook).  Additional homework assignments will be recorded in their planner and should be completed to be turned in the following school day. Homework is an extension of what your child is learning in class and therefore it is imperative it be completed daily.

READING LOG

In order to receive credit for reading a book, your child will need to either successfully pass a Reading Counts quiz on the computer at school OR write a response (expectations glued in the front of their reading journal).  After successful completion of either a quiz or response, the student will record the book on their "Finished Book Log."   The third grade reading goal is 30 chapter books.  We encourage your child to read chapter books from a variety of reading genres.

LUNCH

NOTE: CAFETERIA LUNCH IS $1.50.  Lunches may be paid for in advance in the cafeteria or by going online to www.mylunchmoney.com.  If your child is bringing lunch money with them, please be sure they have a secure way of keeping up with it.  We do not have a way to keep food or beverages cold for the class.

Ride the Wave : Activities to Try at Home

Please work with your child 5-10 minutes each night reviewing addition and subtraction math facts.  If you would like to purchase flash cards you can find them at the Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart for approximately $1.00.  There are also many free math websites your child can access to help them learn their math facts in a timely manner.

After your child has completed their 20 minutes of reading homework, ask them to summarize it for you (3-4 sentences) before they write it in their Reading Summaries Notebook.  This will help ensure they are comprehending what they're reading.

Regularly review spelling and vocabulary words each night.

Our S.T.A.R. Classroom

As we begin this school year we will review with students our rules, rituals, and routines.  First, welcome to our S.T.A.R. classroom!  We would like to share with you our classroom rules which are represented by the acronym S.T.A.R.

1. Smart —get smart by paying attention.

2. Treat others like you want to be treated.

3. Act, talk, and express feelings in an appropriate way.

4. Respect everyone - classmates, other students, teachers, and all adults.

S
tudents are expected to follow all of the rules, rituals, & routines.

3rd Grade Discipline Policies & Procedures

In order to create a successful learning environment, all students must be respectful of each other’s right to learn.  It is expected that they comply with the Duval County Code of Conduct, school-wide rules, and classroom rituals, routines and procedures.  This year we will continue to utilize the card-flipping classroom management system.  Each child  starts each nine weeks with 100 points for conduct.  Each time a student flips their card they have a point deducted from 100.   If your child flips their card a note will be written in their agenda indicating the reason why they had to flip.  Please be sure to check and sign their agenda each night.  Please see the grading scale below:

¨ 90—100 = A

¨ 80—89 = B

¨ 70—79 = C

¨ 60—69 = D

¨ 0—59 = F

Consequences

The following consequences will apply when a student flips their card during the day:

0 Flips =  Great Day!

1 Flip =  5 minutes off free recess

2 Flips =  10 minutes off free recess

3 Flips =  No recess

4 Flips =  No recess

NO HOMEWORK = NO RECESS*

*If your child does not have their homework they will be required to complete it during recess.
