ENGLISH SYLLABUS

 

1. FCAT Strategies:  Students will receive instruction on a regular basis on selected FCAT stategies on details, context, summaries and strategies such as Main Idea/Detail, Question and Answer Relationship and others. 

2.  LEARNING STRATEGIES:  Among the strategies that will be stressed will be "Chunking" which will be used to read/analyze and comprehend a variety of texts.3
3.  LITERARY ANALYSIS/READING STRATEGIES: Students will read and do writing  assignments on a regular basis on handouts from selected textbooks, focusing on reading  comprehension, literary analysis and reading strategies.
4. DIRECTED OPINION/JOURNAL WRITING:   Students will be asisgned to write journal entries on a variety of topics slected by the teacher, on an individual and group basis with discussion and debate where appropriate,  on a regular basis. Students will also be exposed to and expected to write poetry and write poems and short prose pieces based on visual prompts.
5. GRAMMAR/COMPOSITION:   On a regular baiss students will receive instruction in, and complete exercises, in basic grammatical rules and principles.
6. RELATED READING/WRITING WORK: (a)  Students are occasionally encouraged to make class book reports on a volunteer basis, discussing books they are currently reading.
     (B) Students are occasionally required to write one paragraph summaries of books they are reading, discussing plot, theme and characters.

GRADING;  Class grades are derived from a combination of in-class assignments, classroom activities, and participation  in those activities, and test grades. Most writing assignments will be on topics selected by the  teacher through the end of the semester, probably no more than three such assignments per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:   Students  are responsible for abiding by both schooland classroom  rules and procedures, attending class promptly and regularly, completing everyassignment, doing your very best to learn and presenting yourself in a courteous manner.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:  Students  are responsible for for bringing the following to class each day: a blue/black ink pen, a pencil, and a composition book/and loose leaf paper.
GRADING: Grades are based on writing assignments, tests, quizzes, classwork and participation.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS:  
   * Students will abide by the school dress code, tardy policy, and the Student Code of Conduct.
    * No hats, caps, head scarves, do-rags, etc. are allowed to be worn in the classroom.
    * ID badges must be worn and visible at all times.
    * No electronic equipment allowed to be used in my classroom: cell phones, MP3 players, iPods, games. If seen or heard they will be turned into the admionistation.
    * Students will be expected to be in class before the tardy bell rings.

RESEARCH SYLLABUS

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  The main goal of this course is to allow students the chance to write freely in a creative environment, focusing on expository text and creative writing. Students will learn the language  for talking about writing and critically analyze pieces of  writing. Attention will be paid to writing for writing's sake, as well as writing  for specific audiences.  Students will be asked to be imaginative and to push themselves out of their "comfort zone" to take new risks and embrace new concepts in writing. Self-editing, peer editing, teacher and conferencing  will play a large role in this class. In addition, students will work to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension.

COURSE CONCEPTS AND CONTENT:

The purpose of this course is to provde instruction that will enable students with disabilities to acquire and use strategies and skills to enhance their independence as learners in educational and community settings.
   
Content of this course will include, but not be limited to, the following:
