SPECIAL WINTER BREAK ANNOUNCEMENTS
I am sending all students home with updated Grade Reports on Wednesday, December 16th. These grade reports are physical copies with notes and missing work attached. Please be sure to look over your student's report and have them complete any make-up work over the vacation. Please sign it and have your student submit the report and any missing work on Monday, January 4th.
ALSO, students are expected to read two out of the three weeks falling between 12/13 and 1/4, or a total of five hours. Please have your student document his/her reading using the Making Connections reading strategy. (Summarize and then make a text to text, text to self, or text to world connection. It may begin with "This reminds me of...") Anyone wishing to earn extra credit and/or replace a missing reading log grade can do double reading for double points by reading up to ten hours for credit.
Welcome to duPont Middle School - an "A" school three years running!
The transition from elementary to middle school brings some exciting opportunities for you to grow as a person and student. Your teachers are here to help guide you through this time.
Middle school means changing classes and getting used to six different teachers, having lockers, and choosing from electives like art, music and computers. These changes are exciting but also require you to be more responsible and organized than you have ever been before!
To assist our new 6th graders with organization, planners will be provided to you. You are encouraged to use this planner to record your assignments and homework each day, note when you have quizzes and tests to study for, and more. Make this a good habit from the beginning and it will pay off!
Green, Gold & Platinum Card Program
duPont rewards students with good behavior and academics with special events at school such as ice cream parties, movies, and early chances to buy tickets to after school sports events. -Gold Card: all A's and B's, 70% of AR goal

About Language Arts
We will be following Duval County’s new Learning Schedule for Language Arts, which is focused on giving all students a diverse selection of reading material and writing assignments in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama. We will be focusing our studies on: 1) strategies for reading comprehension, 2) developing writing skills through short and extended responses and essays, and 3) learning how literature affects the way we experience the world.
