American History (8th grade) Syllabus


Course Description:

 

The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand the development of the United States within the context of history by examining various connections to the past to prepare for the future, and as participating members of a democratic society.  Students will use knowledge of history, geography, economics, political processes, religion, ethics, diverse cultures, and humanities to solve problems in academic, civic, social, and employment settings.

 

Course Objectives:

 

  1. Students will understand how historians use a variety of tools to discover/interpret information.
  2. Students will understand how Native Americans civilizations contributed to modern U.S. society.
  3. Students will understand how economic and political factors in colonial America contributed to the struggle for independence.
  4. Students will understand the concept of the United States Constitution and how the system of checks and balances regulates the power of governmental branches.
  5. Students will understand how the Civil War defined the United States as a nation.  



World History (6th grade) Syllabus

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to enable students to understand the development of the world community within the context of history by examine their connections to the past to prepare for the future as participating members of a global society. Students will use knowledge of history, geography, economics, political processes, religion, ethics, diverse cultures, and humanities to solve problems in academic, civic, social, and employment settings.

 

Course Objectives:

 

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze maps.
  2. Students will understand how the five themes of geography affect the way people live.
  3. Students will understand how world religions impact the development and culture of civilizations.
  4. Students will understand various technological advancements and their impact on a civilization’s ability to flourish.
  5. Students will understand how various leaders and governments affect the growth and development of civilizations.  



Grading Policy:

 

Tests = 30%                                       
Participation = 10%            
Homework = 10%                                
Assignments = 20%                             
Essays = 10%                                      
Quizzes = 10%                                   
Compass Odyssey = 10%

 

Grading Scale:

 

A = 90-100                                           D = 60-69             

B = 80-89                                             F = 59-below

C = 70-79

 

Make-up Work:

 

Students will have an opportunity to make-up any missed assignments on Earl Release days (Wednesday).

 

Required Instructional Materials:

 

Students will need notebook paper, a 3 ring binder, #2 pencil(s), blue/black ink pen(s), 12 colored pencils, and 1 pencil/pen pouch.  All textbooks are provided for in-school useage.

The World Factbook:

Provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities. The Reference tab includes: maps of the major world regions, as well as Flags of the World, a Physical Map of the World, a Political Map of the World, and a Standard Time Zones of the World map.
