The 7th grade science curriculum includes the study of:

                             -The Nature of Science – Inquiry

                             -The Nature of Matter

                             -Processes of Life

                             -Interactions in the Environment

                             -Processes that Shape the Earth

 

70% of the grade comes from the student’s ability to demonstrate understanding.  Students will use the concepts accurately to:

                             -develop descriptions, explanations, and models

                             -complete quizzes

                             -complete performance tasks

 

25% of the grade will come from the student’s ability to demonstrate scientific inquiry skills.  Students will:

                             -demonstrate competence with tools

                             -make observations

                             -collect data

                             -analyze results

                             -draw conclusions

                             -use appropriate methods to investigate

All students are expected to complete a science fair project. 

Science Fair presentations will be the last few days before the winter break.  To help students with pacing, components of the project will be assigned and graded through the 1st and 2nd quarter.  Each student will be given a handbook.  Please call or email Ms. Fowler with any questions or concerns.

 

5% of the grade will come from the student’s ability to demonstrate effective scientific communication by:

                             -representing data in multiple ways

                             -explain a science concept or procedure

                             -critique published material

                             -communicate in a form that suits the purpose

 

 

 

 

Expectations

1.Be on time.

2.Have materials:         -paper

                                      -pencil or pen with black or blue ink

                                      -notebook /folder to keep papers

3.Participate

4.Work respectfully with your group.

5.Record your own data/answers while doing assignments.

 

Homework

Daily

Each day, students are given between 1 and 5 questions to study.  The next day, the same questions are given as a mini quiz. 

 

Incomplete Assignments

Ms. Fowler will try to design assignments that can be completed in class.  If needed, students may take work home to complete.  Students will usually be given at least two evenings before the final deadline.

 

Make up due to Absence

Students are given two days to make up work for every day missed.  Please contact Ms. Fowler to make arrangements after a long term absence.  If a student misses a lab activity, they will be offered alternative book work, or may arrange to make up the activity before or after school.

 

Science Fair

Project will be due the last few days before winter break.  Assignments for several components will be given through the 1st and 2nd quarter.  Check the website or planner for due dates.  The first assignment, to choose a topic, is due September 30.

 

To Earn an A on an Assignment

1.The assignment must be completed.

2.All answers/parts must be accurate.

3.Demonstrates understanding of the standard:

          -uses appropriate vocabulary and skills

          -uses relevant detail or examples

4.When needed, uses science inquiry skills

5.Uses your own words, written in complete sentences with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.
