Welcome to First Coast High School 2009-2010!!!
Welcome to my class. I look forward to having another successful year. I will be teaching Geometry and Algebra II Honors for the school year 2009-2010 I have provided a brief description each course, supply list, and grading scale.
ALGEBRA II COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to use problem solving strategies with the knowledge of algebra, geometry, and functions to formulate appropriate solutions, and to visualize, express, and graph functions that can be used to solve a variety of real world and mathematical problems. This course also places a heavy emphasis on group work and social interaction.
GEOMETRY COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to develop the geometric relationships and deductive strategies that can be used to solve a variety of real world and mathematical problems. This course also places a heavy emphasis on group work and social interaction.
REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR CPM COURSES: Students will be issued the College Preparatory Math (CPM) textbook and CollegeBoard SpringBoard textbook. The SpringBoard textbook will remain at school for in class group work. Every student must have a 1½ or 2 inch 3 ring binder that will hold their CPM textbook AND daily materials.
Items to Purchase
The basic materials required are needed for the student notebooks:
All students need to have the Texas Instrument Graphing Calculator (any TI 83, or TI 84 models). The calculator is not cheap. The price range is $94 to $129. They can be purchased from Wal-Mart, Target, Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Circuit City, Best Buy, or any online source. Not required but greatly needed to be successful in the course. Please note the calculator will be use for all high school math (Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, and other subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, college entrance exams (SAT and ACT) , and throughout the college career.
Interactive Student Notebook
Students will be required to maintain an organized notebook. All students are required to keep a record of all the information that is covered during the year. Everything pertaining to math will be kept in this notebook. A table of contents will be kept up to date. This table will list every warm-up, classwork, homework, test and quiz that will be assigned. The student must enter date and record grades in this table. Detailed instructions will be given regarding the upkeep of this notebook. The notebook is a test grade counted towards each reporting period.
Note: The notebook will be divided into five sections. Please label the tabs:
(1)Warm-ups, (2) Notes/Classwork, (3) Tool Kit, (5) Homework, (4) FCAT Toolkit
