I CAN'T BELIEVE IT IS ALREADY 3RD NINE WEEKS!!!
Dates: January 25, 2010 to March 29th, 2010

I truly can't believe how quickly the time passes. We are off and starting the 3rd nine weeks and I want to update you on the student's responsibilities. They are required to read 3 books in class and they can do it because I assist in finding books that are at their reading level. Also, they will be doing another Theme of the Month (outside of class) where they need to find a book or article on a particular subject. That information is below.

Theme of the Month

CHARITY
DUE Feburary 26. 2010

Students are to find a book or article on "CHARITY". Once they complete the reading, the student is to come to me to get the worksheet.

Compass Odyssey

To assist students in becoming bettter readers, there is an online learning program called Compass Odyssey that can be accessed at home, in the library, and even after school in my room. I, personally, have assigned the students particular reading skills that will be beneficial to them in the long run.
For the 3rd nine weeks, I will give students extra credit for those who make the effort. I will be after school on Tuesday's or by appointment to come into my classroom to use the computers.

The time will be 1:45 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

This can assist students in many ways which are to boost grades, to build on skills, and most importantly to take responsibility of themselves.

The following are the directions on how to get on Compass Odyssey from home:

Odyssey is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any broadband internet connection.  Sorry, dial up will not run it.

The following steps will allow you to run the Odyssey program from your home, a friend’s house, or any public library (if you tell them you are doing Odyssey for school, they’ll waive the time limit.

System Check:

  1. The first time you try to do Odyssey from home, and ONLY the FIRST TIME, you will need to be sure that your home computer has the necessary programs to run the course.
  2. Go to the website www.compasslearningodyssey.com you cannot access your class work from here.  This is only to run a system check.
  3. Select the system requirements tab at the bottom of the page.  Then select system check.  You will need to use the provided links to download anything that is marked with a red x.  Once you’ve done this, you are ready to get started.

Logging In From Home:

  1. The website for home access is https://odyssey.duvalschools.org you cannot access your coursework through the same website we used for the system check.
  2. The log in screen must have Duval County Public Schools on it or your username and password will come up as invalid.
  3. Your home username and password are the same as they are here at school.

Problems:

  • If you are having trouble logging in, make sure you are on the right page.  Remember, you cannot log in through the Compass Learning website, you must be on the Duval Schools site.
  • If you are still having trouble accessing the site, you can call the county’s help desk at 348-5200.  Compass troubles are option #5.
