ACADEMIC SKILLS FOR FUNCTIONAL LIVING:

LANGUAGE ARTS PURPOSE:

Phonics based reading, using Reading Mastery, is for students who are capable of:

*Retaining and blending letter sounds to form words

*Comprehension of read material

 

Sight word recognition, using PCI Reading, is for students who either have been unsuccessful with phonics based reading or whose reading comprehension has plateaued on a first or second grade level. 

 

Leisure reading is recommended and highly encouraged whether books are read by or to the student.  A 25-book chart is posted in the classroom.  Students who meet the 25-book criteria will be invited to the reading ice cream sundae social at the end of the year held in the classroom. Some books are available for check out in the classroom when the public library is not an option.   A book report needs to be completed, for each book, and returned to receive credit.  The form is available in class and on my website.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR FUNCTIONAL LIVING:

PURPOSE:  To provide instruction in the expressive and receptive communication concepts and skills to enable students with disabilities to function at their highest levels and participate effectively in the community.  Emphasis is placed on the practical application of communication skills as they relate to daily tasks of personal life and the workplace.  Focus is on safety/informational signs, fast food/restaurant, employment, and grocery words.
